BCU White Water Safety & Rescue

White Water Safety & Rescue

The BCU White Water Safety and Rescue is a two-day course which covers all the basic safety and rescue techniques required for white water paddlers of any experience. We’ll use our vast experience of paddling a variety of white water styles with groups of differing abilities and dynamics to tailor the course to give you the practical experiences most useful to you and your paddling buddies. The course covers topics and techniques such as:
Shout, reach, throw, row, go
Self, team, victim, kit
Safe group river running tactics
Safe swimming in white water
Hydrology: understand how to read white water and identify and avoid major hazards
Using a throwline effectively
Boat to swimmer rescues
Using chest harnesses
Live bait
Mechanical advantage
Shallow water crossings
Safe boat chasing techniques

BCU 3 Star White Water : Training

BCU 3 Star Training

This course will take you through everything you need to prepare for your 3 Star White Water, progressing your personal skills, group awareness and safety skills. The award shows that you are a competent grade 2 kayaker, able to paddle such waters as part of a peer-group of similar ability with a good understanding of potential hazards and how to deal with them.
What we will cover:
Paddling sections of grade 2 water as part of a led group.
Boat control on both flat and moving water environments.
Rolling techniques.
Planning a river trip.
Throw line techniques.
Towing techniques.
Deep-water rescue techniques.

You will leave the course with an action plan to progress your paddling further and moving towards a successful assessment.

With the option of a straight 1 day assessment or a combined 2-day training and assessment, you can be confident that we’ll take the time to look at your personal skills, group awareness and safety skills, with our experienced coaches giving you guidance on any weak areas.
