Lowri on TV again!

We’re excited to announce that Lowri will feature as the Star Kayaker in a new TV show called the Indestructibles on Dave. The series takes a fun look at various extreme sports, with the presenters set various challenges. On this show, DIY Daredevils, we take on the rapids of the might Tryweryn in cardboard canoes!

The show will also feature footage they filmed of Lowri ripping up the Tryweryn in her freestyle boat and clips from her trips around the World.

Here’s a 19 second taster… the full episode airs at 5.30pm 6th December 2015, then will be available online at http://mpora.co/WatchOnline.

GB Team: Lowri’s back!

6 years after I was last properly on the GB Freestyle team (I did selection in 2010 and 2011 but gave my place away due to other commitments); I decided to see how I faired at the 2015 selection competition last weekend.

I’m super excited to announce I finished joint 1st overall, and have a place on the 2015 GB Freestyle Team!

I was especially proud to win the Lee Valley event, in a borrowed boat, having never paddled that feature before – although I think having no expectations might have actually helped me out there (that, and dancing in the eddy with Islay beforehand). I certainly felt much happier than the previous day at Hurley, where despite getting a good result, I didn’t enjoy and felt like I hadn’t paddled anywhere near my best – and frankly it all just felt a bit too serious.

Lowri at Hurley GB Team Selection 2015

The World Championships are on the Ottawa at the end of August / start of September. I’m now working out how to fit in any suitable practice between a busy summer of FlowFree trips around Europe (Italy in May and Austria in July & August are looking particularly popular), and a whole load of weddings! Looks like a fun summer ahead…

Congrats to everyone who made the GB Team this weekend (not sure full official results are out yet). It was a tough contest with a very high standard of paddling in pretty much every category. It was great to catch up with old friends and hang out with people I’ve not had chance to in ages, and to see the new talent coming through the ranks. As always, there were some politics (I’ve not missed that!), but I’d like to give a big shout out to the organisers for their work over the weekend – I was very impressed that they managed to get through the whole Lee Valley event in 2 hours! Top work.

So, the next chapter begins. Exciting times!

National Student Rodeo : be a hero!

Hello! If you’ve not met us yet, I’m Flo, and I’m Eddy, we are FlowFree’s mascots. We join the FlowFree coaches & friends on adventures all over the world as well as tagging along on FlowFree courses & trips to cause mischief! So far we’ve been to Scotland, Uganda, New Zealand among other places… (follow our adventures on facebook).

Earlier this month we went along to the National Student Rodeo in Nottingham. We’d heard a lot about it as FlowFree has been attending the event for 10 years and sponsoring it for 6. With over 1000 people in attendance, this is the biggest “freestyle” event in the World, but it’s like no other freestyle event we’ve ever seen.

Almost every university had set themselves up with a shanty-town style base along the grassy banks of the man-made white water course and with some epic team effort fancy dress outfits, wall-to-wall sunshine and awesome tunes blasting out, it is no wonder the whole weekend has a carnival vibe (which incidentally is the theme of next year’s event).

Incredibles at NSR

kayak in bg

We were on the look-out for awesome on-the-water fancy dress, as the boss had said we could give away a day’s coaching for the one that impressed us the most. With an awesome theme to the weekend of Heroes & Villans, there were some great costumes around. We had special “SuperFlo” and “SuperEddy” costumes prepared and wore them all weekend!

Minion on the water

As this is a student event, the party is LEGEN…

…wait for it…

NSR Party

…DARY!

We were keen to experience it for ourselves – our first big party – so we donned our capes and pulled down our masks…

The boss, Lowri, dressed as SuperFlo too!

Our little heads are a bit fuzzy as to the details, but we remember millions of minions, the whole cast of thunderbirds (with ships), many disturbing wonderwomen, generally far too much lycra and then far too little!

One of our favourite moments of the event was the novice ladies final… what a spectacle! Most of those girls had barely been on moving water before and there they were chucking themselves into a stopper, dressed in silly costumes and trying to outdo one another in the realms of the ridiculous to impress the crowd (and judges). Massive congratulations to Katy Farmer who finished in 1st place and has bagged herself 2-days of coaching with us! Ooooh, good prize!

Pulling out all the stops. Novice Ladies Final.

Congratulations also to St Andrews University for putting that fabled student procrastination time to good use by turning a plain old red Dagger G-Force into an awesome Spiderman-boat. This photo doesn’t do it any justice as the real art was on the front and hull, but it does involve a shudder rudder! They win themselves a day of FlowFree coaching too.

Thanks to everyone involved for an awesome weekend. See you next year… we are planning our Carnival costumes already! Eddy loves colourful feathers…

A little Chile video

Chile is a place I’d wanted to go since I’d watched VHS videos of the Futa and Claro when I was 15 years old. It really didn’t disappoint. The country is beautiful, the rivers are varied and the waterfalls clean. There’s literally a lifetime of paddling and exploring to be had there and I’m sure […]

Chipper Challenge

It’s been a bit of shock returning to the UK from a sunny Chile in this weather, but this morning I gritted my teeth, donned my mitts and dug out my slalom boat from under the snow… A few of us have started using Strava to time ourselves on sections of river, it’s great for […]
